NEW YORK -- Tonight, State Senator Daniel Squadron, Congressman Jerrold Nadler, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, and Council Member Margaret Chin issued the following joint statement upon passage of a Community Board resolution regarding Occupy Wall Street:
The Community Board resolution lays out a clear path to solve the legitimate concerns of residents and businesses while protecting the protesters' First Amendment rights.
As the resolution states, this path must include the enforcement of health and safety laws and noise ordinances without the City or Brookfield resorting to "excessive and unnecessary force."
We continue to believe that it is possible to simultaneously preserve the right to protest and the right of residents to peacefully enjoy their homes -- both fundamental rights with which everyone should be concerned.
We are committed to working with the community, the City, OWS, and Brookfield to make this framework a reality.
