Enacting the Power New York plan was a collaborative process. I commend Governor Cuomo for his involvement in helping us advance the legislation and for signing the bill into law today.
We need more ways to strengthen and diversify our state’s energy portfolio, and this Act sets us on the right track. Our energy needs are increasing substantially, and we need to meet those needs with more power production. This law will enable more generation facilities to come on-line through a reformed siting process which will benefit consumers and businesses while protecting our environment.
Furthermore, New York has some of the highest energy-related costs in the country, and more competition created by additional energy supplies will serve to protect consumers by lowering their utility bills.
The law also helps us control our energy future by offering a mechanism for homeowners to afford energy efficiency upgrades in their homes. Families only stand to benefit from cheaper electric or gas bills. Also, when we reduce energy consumption at home we reduce pressure on our energy supply chain. That’s a good thing when the demand for power is increasing.
Like the ReCharge New York law we enacted earlier this year, the Power New York Act represents a major accomplish for the people and businesses of New York State who deserve a government that works with them and for them, not against them.
