Get Ready For the Mid-Summer Classic - 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Coming July 16 - Register Now

Senator Jack M. Martins and the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament committee announced that the 7th Annual 3-on-3 Tournament will be played on Saturday, July 16 at Dutch Broadway School in Elmont at the Assemblyman Tom Alfano Basketball Courts, located in the rear of the school. A raindate has been scheduled for July 17. The tournament is free and there is no cost to participate.

The 3-on-3 Committee has also proudly announced that State Senator Jack Martins is now the prime sponsor of the tournament along with Highlighting Success. “Senator Martins and Highlighting Success have worked very closely with the committee and asked to get even more involved in this community event. We thank Senator Martins and Highlighting Success for helping us bring the tournament to another level,” said Marvin Lee, a member of the tournament executive committee.

The tournament hosts young people from the fourth grade through college for a day of basketball, soccer and football fun. In addition to the tournament, a soccer clinic is being held throughout the day sponsored by the Elmont Soccer Club. Later in the day, a brand new 7-on-7 football game series will be played!

Tournament organizers are working overtime to make this year’s installment bigger and better than the past. The tournament, now in its seventh year, is known as "The Summer Event" for the greater community. The tournament is named after former community resident, education activist and 9-11 NYC Firefighter David Dangerfield.

“Tournament forms are available now and teams are already on the courts practicing shots and getting ready for the big day. Last year, the games were really exciting and had everybody cheering. I can’t wait to see everyone hit the courts and to watch that slam dunk competition,” said Senator Jack Martins. "Registration goes on right until a half hour before game time on July16.”

Tournament teams must fill out a form, create a team name, and mail it to the 3-on-3 Tournament Committee at 567 Oakley Avenue, Elmont, New York 11003. Tip-off for basketball will be at 10:30am on Saturday, July 16th. Tournament participants must register their teams a half hour before their respective divisions tip-off. The 5th and 6th grade divisions tip off at 10:30 a.m. sharp.

State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, a co-host for the tournament noted, “This is one of the most exciting events I have ever attended for young people. You have basketball, soccer, a slam dunk contest, 7-on-7 football and all kinds of great things for our young people to enjoy. I'm very proud to be a co-sponsor of this event with Senator Martins and I can't wait for July 16th!"

Senator Martins also announced the age divisions for the tournament and timing for the games. The 4th , 5th and 6th grade division will begin at 10:30. The 7th and 8th grade division begin at 12:30. The 9th and 10th grade division start at 2:30pm. The 11th and 12th grade division start at 4:30. The starts at 5:30pm. The 7-on-7 Football contests begin at 5 p.m..

“Get your sneakers on and get ready to play! From morning until night, there will be a lot to do and a lot of fun. The 3-on-3 committee has worked incredibly hard on all the events. I salute each and every one of the volunteers of this effort because without them this could never happen,” said Senator Martins.

Nassau County Legislator John Ciotti noted, “Last year, I was out on the court playing a few games myself. I have a feeling this year’s tournament is going to be incredible. I‘ve met with the committee and have seen all the preparation for this year‘s tournament. Let‘s put it this way. It‘s going to be great!”

Town of Hempstead Councilman Ed Ambrosino said, “The tournament has become a major event for our community. Let's play hard, have fun and enjoy a great day of basketball. This year, I’ll be shooting some hoops myself!”

Tournament Chairman Scott Cushing also announced that outside of sports, many groups will be hosting events that will surely be crowd pleasers throughout the day. Elmont’s own DJ Elzie Ross otherwise known as “Mr. Classy,” will be pumping up the crowd with music throughout the day as the official DJ for the 3-on-3. He will joined by TRU-MC Elijah Ross and DJ MikeyD aka Michael Dugue.

The soccer clinic is promising to be a crowd pleaser as well. “We’ve put together a partnership with the Elmont Soccer Club to put on a first class soccer clinic complete with a soccer field size inflatable soccer quad,” Cushing said. "We also have some outstanding college soccer stars who are lending their considerable talents to this great day. If you want to play, learn the fundamentals, a few tricks and have fun simply come to the inflatable soccer quad field on July 16h to get involved."

Jordan Dangerfield, son of David Dangerfield, who plays starting safety for the Towson University Tigers, will be one of the football college stars at the tournament who will be participating in the 7-on-7 football games. “July 16th will be a great day for everyone to come together in a spirit of community we’ve never seen and I can’t wait!”

Franklin Thomas, referee chairman for the tournament noted, “The games are always competitive and a lot of fun. You can get your forms from Senator Martins’ office by calling 746-5924. Fill them out and start practicing those jump shots and dunks!”

Senator Martins will also be co-hosting the 3nd annual Slam Dunk Competition that day. Timothy Jean, last year’s winner of the contest, said, “We had some sensational dunks last year at the contest. This year, we’re looking to top it! It doesn’t matter how old you are, it’s going to be a lot of fun!”

Sandra Smith, another tournament organizer noted that he tournament is free for all participants. “Lunch, drinks and snacks throughout the day are FREE of charge. There are NO fees for entry into the tournament and all comers will receive t-shirts, assorted give-aways and great prizes! The 3-on-3 is going to be sensational!”
