Take Back Parents' Rights

SEN. Jack M. Martins

According to a recent article in the Scientific American, there have been many studies showing increases in rates of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and suicide have skyrocketed in the United States since the time that smartphones and social media became part of our lives.  In fact, suicide has become the leading cause of death for young people aged 13 to 14 and the second-leading cause of death for those aged 15 to 24.  The American Academy of Pediatrics has declared a “national state of emergency in children’s mental health."  The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a similar warning last year.  What is worse is that female teens appear to be the most victimized group as a result of social media when it comes to mental health.

Parents should have a right to know what social media platforms their children are using, and the amount of time they are using them.  Sign my petition supporting a bill that would require social media companies to get parental permission BEFORE minors are allowed to sign up for accounts.  My bill also gives parents the right to limit the amount of time their children access these platforms.

Make your voice heard, and take back parents’ rights when it comes to social media and big tech by signing my petition to support S.6418
