Peace Rally in Morris Heights
José M. Serrano
October 5, 2011
Senator Serrano joined the Morris Heights Community for a Prayer Vigil and Peace Rally organized by Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson. The event, themed "Community in Crisis", took place in the Sedgwick Avenue Playground in the Bronx, and was structured as a forum to speak out against the high volume of gun related violence that has recently plagued the community.
"The recent shootings are a strong indication that all of us- parents, teachers, community residents, and elected officials- must work together to educate our youth", said Senator Serrano. "The youth are an integral part of our future and we must provide them with positive outlets where they can focus their attention, and safe alternatives to the streets."
This event was co-sponsored by Senator Serrano, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, the Bronx District Attorney's Office, the 46th Precinct, Community Board 5, and other elected officials. Also in attendance were District Leader Cathy Stroud and Reverend D. Hicks.
