Squadron Bill Would Ban Additional Assault Weapons In NY State

NEW YORK -- Today, NY State Senator Daniel Squadron released the following statement in response to two shootings in the tri-state area -- one near Prospect Park, Brooklyn that killed a 28-year-old mother, and another in Old Bridge, NJ, involving automatic weapons, that left three dead (including the shooter):

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of these tragedies.

It's time that we in New York and our leaders on the national level finally put in place the common sense gun protections that we need.

We don't know the details of this morning's horrible attack in New Jersey -- but we do know that assault weapons have no place on our streets. A bill I carry would broaden the definition of 'assault weapon' in New York State to include many additional types of military-style guns that are, simply, inappropriate for any civilian to carry.

Passing this and other public safety measures in New York, other states, and at the federal level is a no-brainer.
