New York State currently has over $12 billion in unclaimed funds, said State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady).
Banks, insurance companies, utilities and many other businesses with funds that have been dormant or forgotten must turn those funds over to the State Comptroller's Office, which acts as a custodian until the funds are returned to their rightful owner, reported Senator Farley.
Types of unclaimed funds include savings and checking accounts, uncashed checks, utility deposits and mortgage insurance refunds.
