Senator Martins to Host Important Airplane Noise Hearing on October 28

October 22, 2013

From Senator Jack M. Martins:

I am asking for your help in our continuing fight against deafening airplane noise in our community.

The Port Authority is looking to expand and reconfigure runways at JFK airport which will result in increased air traffic and aircraft noise over our neighborhoods.  Now is the time for us to raise our voices before they are drowned out by the roar of aircraft engines overhead.

I am very pleased to announce that I am hosting a public hearing next week with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to hear your input and comments on the revised draft environmental report and assessment on runway expansions.  I'll be co-hosting at the hearing hearing with Floral Park Mayor Tom Tweedy and Trustee Mary Grace Tomiecki, and with TVSNAC, our local advocacy group that has long been at the forefront of the fight against airplane noise.

This hearing will be held on Monday, October 28th at 8 pm at the Floral Recreation/Pool Building located at 128 Stewart Street, Floral Park.

Port Authority officials will be at the hearing to listen to our concerns and this public meeting is our opportunity to let the Port Authority know that we are being unfairly burdened by the increased use of certain runways at area airports.  We need to focus the Port Authority on mitigating local impact when it considers the effect that this change in runway configurations will have on our communities.

This hearing and comment period is also about making sure that our suburban quality of life is not sacrificed for the benefit of everyone's more convenient air travel.  One does not necessarily stand at cross purposes to the other.  We deserve better.

We must remain vigilant and express our concerns and input on any and all proposals related to this quality of life issue that impacts our neighborhood.

I hope to see you at the hearing.
