Work Begins on Jericho Turnpike Project

Work has begun on the Jericho Turnpike road resurfacing project, which encompasses a stretch of roadway from Glen Cove Road to the city line. This segment of the project that has begun includes the area of the roadway from Beebe Road in Mineola to Glen Cove Road in Old Westbury.

Beginning, April 8, travel lanes on NY Route 25/Jericho Turnpike between Beebe Road in Mineola and Glen Cove Road in Old Westbury in the towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead will be closed Monday through Friday, between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. weather permitting, to accommodate construction operations. However, a single travel lane in each direction will remain open to drivers throughout the night. These night time closures are needed to perform pavement repair and resurfacing work that would be too disruptive to the high volume of traffic in this area during the day. Motorists are being warned in advance of the closings via electronic road signs but should plan ahead and use alternate routes to avoid delays.

Under this current operation, this 2.2 mile section of roadway is being resurfaced to assure the longevity of the roadway and maintain a safe riding surface for the approximately 33,000 motorists who use this section of Jericho Turnpike each day. The old, worn pavement surface and markings are being removed followed by the installation of new pavement surface and markings. As with any roadway project, this operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather.

Senator Martins felt it was inportant to involve the local communities impacted by the Jericho Turnpike project. He, therefore, facilitated meetings between the communities such as New Hyde Park and Mineola as well as the other communities with the State Department of Transportation so that if local officials had any questions or concerns, they could be addressed. The project has been set up to impact the communities as little as possible, which is why the work is being done overnight while a lane of traffic will still be set up for eastbound and westbound traffic flow.
