(East Harlem, NY) - Senator Serrano, Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito and the East Harlem Immigrant Service Network sponsored "No More Invisibility: Who Is Our Transgender Community and What do They Have to Say?," a community discussion centered on the human and civil rights for our transgender community following the violent attack and subsequent death of Islan Nettles, a transgender woman. This discussion featured a panel consisting entirely of transgender persons who lent their insights and expertise in many areas of concern facing the LBGT community.
"There has been an alarming amount of violence aimed at our LGBT community and it must stop" said Senator Serrano. "We must all make it our responsibility to increase the dialogue and foster a greater understanding of the transgender population and the issues they face."
Senator Serrano has been a staunch ally of the LGBTQ community and outspoken on issues involving civil and human rights, and well as public safety and awareness.
