State Senator Patty Ritchie celebrated Alcoa’s next phase of its modernization project at a groundbreaking held Monday at the Alcoa East Aluminum facility in Massena. In addition to the groundbreaking, the company also presented $10 million to the New York Power Authority, to capitalize the North Country Economic Development Fund.
Plans for modernization include the construction of a new potline at Alcoa’s Massena East, formerly the Reynolds Metals smelter, which will produce 144,000 metric tons of aluminum per year; upgrades to existing facilities at Massena West; and modifications to other existing facilities that will help integrate the two plants and support the new potline. The modernization project is expected to protect 900 jobs at Alcoa.
