Sanders’ Minimum Wage Bill Right Up Governor Cuomo’s Alley

This past weekend, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo vowed to support the passage of legislation that would raise the state’s minimum hourly wage to $10.10 next year, and provide for annual increases that would be indexed to the rate of inflation.
This past January, New York State Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Queens) introduced a bill (S6334) that would achieve those very aims, help to upgrade the standard of living for the state’s working poor, and spur economic growth in every county.
During a public hearing on the potential effect of a minimum wage increase, Sanders said the following about Governor Cuomo’s recent announcement, “It was refreshing to hear our governor propose the very bill that I had proposed some months ago…I look forward to working with him, and I think that the sooner we get to it the better.”
Sanders also proposed legislation (S6537) in February that would grant individual municipalities in New York the power to raise their wage floors even higher than the state level, based on the determining factors impacting each one’s residents.
