SENATOR GIPSON RECOGNIZES SEPTEMBER 11TH AS PATRIOT DAY AND NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE AND REMEMBRANCE

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – New York State Senator Terry Gipson (D-Dutchess, Putnam) recognized that today, September 11, 2014, is Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance.Patriot Day was established in 2001 when President George W. Bush signed U.S. House of Representatives Joint Resolution 71 designating September 11 as Patriot Day to memorialize the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks. Flags at residences and in public spaces are flown at half-staff in observance. In 2012, President Barack Obama renamed Patriot Day “Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance” to encourage public service in honor of the first responders and volunteers without whom many more lives would undoubtedly have been lost.

“The Hudson Valley, New York State and our nation will never forget the events of September 11, 2001,” Senator Gipson said. “13 years later, in communities across New York State, we hold close the memories of those we lost and give thanks to the brave men and women in our Armed Forces who defend our freedom every day. Performing public service in honor of those we lost on 9/11 and those who served in its aftermath is a special tribute and an important way to make our communities stronger.”
