Allows Veterans to Purchase Up To Three Years Of Service Credit in the NYS Retirement System

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) announced today that Senate bill S7839 passed the Senate unanimously.  This legislation institutes a mechanism for veterans to purchase service credit for their time in the military.  The bill language eliminates the requirement that members must have served during specific periods of war or in a specific combat theater and allows all honorably discharged veterans to purchase up to three years of credit for their military service.

“We have been working very hard to craft a bill that will allow our veterans to purchase up to three years of their service in the military,” said Senator Larkin.  “I am pleased that we have been able to close the loophole that prevented our service men and women from getting credit for their service to our country.”

The legislation has had overwhelming support from labor and veterans’ groups across the state and has been sent to the Assembly for action.
