ALBANY – State Senator Daniel Squadron released the following statement regarding S.5837, legislation that would weaken the NY SAFE Act. He debated the bill on the floor of the Senate today.
"Politics is no excuse to undermine SAFE Act provisions that are working. This bill would take power away from the State police and give it to a new agency without consulting either, create an unfunded mandate for counties, and gut the provision requiring ammo dealers to register with the state -- even though that process is working smoothly. Worst of all, this bill undermines assault weapon background checks, creating a process that is convoluted at best and non-existent at worst. That's why the Senate majority tried to push it around the committee process, and why I debated it on the Senate floor.
As I said, this bill is not a reasonable and well-considered amendment to the SAFE Act. It's just politics."
