Senator Parker Hosts Rain Barrel Event

Brooklyn, NY – Continuing his efforts to assist constituents of the 21st Senate District, State Senator Kevin Parker, in partnership with Community Board 17 and the NYC Environmental Protection Agency hosted his 1st Rain Barrel Event at St. Paul’s Church in Flatbush by distributing 200 barrels to constituents in the district.

“I am happy to support the environmental protection actions of the DEP by encouraging New York City residents to install rain barrels in their homes. With the growing use of rain barrels which will result from us having given away 200 of them today to constituents, we are doing our part to create a more sustainable environment,” said Senator Parker.

To reduce storm water runoff and to create a more livable, sustainable city, DEP released the NYC Green Infrastructure Plan and is piloting several storm water best management practices throughout the city. This includes: enhanced tree pits, street side infiltration swales, and blue and green roofs. Rain barrels capture storm water from roofs and store it for future use. By capturing storm water, these barrels save up to 40% annually on water expenses. The water conserved in the rain barrels can be put to future use such as watering  lawns and gardens and washing  cars.
