State Senator Patty Ritchie welcomed Zakiya Saunders, a graduate of Carthage High School and member of the UAlbany women's basketball team to the State Capitol Monday, as the squad was recognized for their play in the 2015 NCAA tournament.
A standout athlete in basketball and track, Zakiya Saunders is the second player ever from Carthage High School—and first since 1998—to earn a scholarship to play Division I basketball.
Zakiya is the daughter of Synithia and Master Sergeant Vincent Saunders, who is a member of the 10th Mountain Division.
