NEW YORK – State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Manhattan) released the following statement in response to Governor Cuomo’s plan, announced in his State of the State address, to limit outside income for state legislators to 15% of their base salary. Senator Hoylman is the prime sponsor of legislation (S.34) that would similarly restrict lawmakers' outside income and ban moonlighting for certain types of professions involving a fiduciary duty like attorneys, physicians or investment brokers.

“State legislators should be subject to the same restrictions as members of Congress when it comes to moonlighting,” said Senator Hoylman. “Just as Washington instituted strong ethics reforms in the wake of Watergate, I’m glad Governor Cuomo is proposing we do the same in Albany after a string of convictions that has eroded the public’s faith in government. Legislators should work for the people – period – not have jobs on the side that, as we’ve seen, can cause conflicts of interest. I’m proud to support the Governor in this endeavor and look forward to working with him and members of the Senate Democratic Conference to get it passed this session.”
