Senator Gianaris Announces Juvenile Miranda Rights Legislation at John Jay College
February 18, 2016
Senator Michael Gianaris participated in the "Emerging Leaders of Justice Series," where he spoke to John Jay students about criminal justice reform and announced his legislation, calling for juvenile Miranda rights.
“Miranda rights are worthless unless they are understood by the arrested individual," said Senator Michael Gianaris. “Statistics make clear too many underage New Yorkers are waiving their Constitutional rights because they do not comprehend them.”
Along with calling for juvenile Miranda rights, Senator Gianaris discussed his legislation to eliminate monetary bail from New York State and fielded questions from former Assemblymember Dan Feldman, a current professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
