SENATOR VENDITTO’S LEGISLATION SUPPORTING LOCAL FIRE DISTRICTS PASSED BY SENATE
Senator Michael Venditto (R-C-I, Massapequa) announced today that legislation he sponsored, S5858-B, passed the Senate unanimously on June 9th, 2016. The bill will benefit local fire districts by raising the dollar-value threshold for surplus items that the district is authorized to sell.
“This legislation will allow fire districts to be able to sell their surplus equipment at fair market value which helps ensure that they have the necessary funding and resources to allow our first responders to better serve and protect our communities.” said Senator Venditto.
Previously, the value for surplus equipment could not exceed $10,000, or $50,000 if the sale was approved by the community through a permissive referendum. That legislation was passed in 1997. My bill, S5858-B, will raise the value limits to $20,000 and $100,000 respectively.
The corresponding legislation in the Assembly, sponsored by Assemblywoman Jean-Pierre passed on June 14th the bill now awaits action by the Governor.
