(Uniondale, NY) -- On Saturday, November 23, elected officials and community leaders gathered for the official renaming of Melvin Harris, Jr. Way in Uniondale.

The designation recognizes and honors the late Melvin Harris, Jr., an outspoken community leader and passionate advocate who served as Commissioner for the Nassau County Commission on Human Rights and President of the Hempstead Chapter of the NAACP. Aided by the advocacy of Mrs. Patty Harris and the Nostrand Gardens Civic Association, State lawmakers Senator Kevin Thomas and Assemblywoman Taylor Darling were able to pass a bill earlier this year to designate a portion of  State Route 102 as "Melvin Harris, Jr. Way."

"The designation of Melvin Harris, Jr. Way honors the life of a man who devoted himself to serving others. In addition to being a loving husband and father, Melvin was a public servant, an outstanding community leader, and a mentor who worked tirelessly to lift others up,” said Senator Thomas. “This dedication will ensure that his legacy of advocacy and public service will forever endure in Uniondale and Nassau County.”
