Second Long Island Hearing on Fair Housing Postponed Due to COVID-19 Emergency

After a Newsday Investigation revealed evidence of widespread racial discrimination and unequal treatment by real estate agents on Long Island, Senator Kavanagh, who chairs the Housing Committee, held a joint public hearing on December 12, 2019 with Consumer Affairs Committee Chair Kevin Thomas and Investigations Committee Chair James Skoufis to take testimony fr0m those who participated in the investigation, brokers, fair housing experts, community based organizations, and individuals in the community. Subsequently, the Senate subpoenaed 67 individuals to appear at a second hearing scheduled for April 17, 2020. Due to the state 0f emergency declared in response to the spread of COVID-19, the Senate announced on March 30 that the April 17 hearing has been postponed to a date yet to be determined.
