Senator Samra Brouk Honors Jeremy Tjhung with New York State Senate’s Commendation Award

Rochester, NY - Today, Senator Samra Brouk (SD-55) honored Jeremy Tjhung with a special commendation from the New York State Senate in recognition of Tjhung’s commitment to creativity, the arts, and the democratic process in our community. Senator Brouk was joined by Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) director and CEO Jonathan Binstock; ChaRon Sattler-Leblanc, Community Organizer for Moms Demand Action; Senator Jeremy Cooney and Assemblymember Jennifer Lunsford.

“Jeremy Tjhung is a community treasure—an active, dedicated, creative partner in big ways and small,” said Senator Brouk. “I am honored to present him the New York State Senate Award of Commendation on his birthday in recognition of his contributions toward the betterment of the Rochester community.”

Tjhung has organized numerous voter registration drives across Monroe County, and became famous for attending community events with his fluorescent “vote hole” frame with the words “I will vote this year” that people would stick their head into for a social media photo opp.

For MAG, Tjhung organized the museum's 2019 Pride Flags project and is currently serving as a community advisor on the MAG’s “Up Against the Wall: Art, Activism, and the AIDS Poster” collaboration between MAG and the University of Rochester’s River Campus Libraries, which is scheduled to open March 2022.

For Moms Demand Action, Tjhung organized Brittany Williams's painting of a young man on a wall at Rocky's Pizza, titled "Through Tragedy, There's Hope."

June 22nd is both Primary Election Day and Tjung’s birthday. Tjhung is currently battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
