Today, together with Senator Kevin Parker, Assemblymembers Al Taylor, Monique Chandler-Waterman and members of the community, we held a press conference at Life of Hope Church in Brooklyn, calling on the New York and Federal Governments to address the humanitarian crisis in Haiti. The Haitian people are suffering every day the anguish of a desperate situation. As a result, the United States is receiving an enormous number of refugees as well as other countries including the Dominican Republic.

In recent days, a group of Senate and Assembly colleagues from New York returned from our first delegation trip to the Dominican Republic. There we spoke with President Luis Abinader and Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez about the Haitian crisis. Dominican officials expressed their desire to help but the lack of support from the international community for this humanitarian crisis.

The Haitian people are subjected to criminal cartels that are killing, robbing, and raping people. The international community, especially the U.S. government, has not done enough. The people of Haiti, who are suffering every day, urgently need the support of the international community.

I join my colleague in the Senate, Senator Parker, in calling on the international community and the federal government to engage and establish ties of assistance to the Haitian people.
