Senator Walczyk Renews Call For Veterans Home In Northern New York

As we prepare to honor the Veterans of our country this week, Senator Walczyk is once again calling for a Veterans Home for Northern New York. In 2021, Senator Walczyk, who was a member of the NYS Assembly at the time, and Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush, wrote a letter to Governor Hochul asking for a Veterans Home in Northern New York. They cited the fact that there are over 14,000 veterans in Jefferson County alone. For many Jefferson County residents, it would be a three hour ride to reach the closest veterans home, a strong deterrent for families to come and visit if they were to take up residency.

Nearly two years later, Senator Walczyk is continuing to fight for a Veterans Home in his district. To this day, the Senator’s office has not received any communication from the Governor’s office on this issue. According to recent census data of the counties that encompass the 49th Senate District, there are over 35,500 veterans that still deserve answers and a Governor who will take care of our Veterans.

“Here we are 715 days later, and we still have a Governor who cares so little for Northern New York Veterans that she won’t take a few moments of her day to respond to our letters. In case she hasn’t noticed, I’m not going away. Northern New York Veterans deserve better, they deserve a state operated Veterans Home. I’ll continue to advocate for them even if our Governor won’t.”
