Governor's State of the State Misses the Mark

ALBANY, 01/10/23 -- State Senator Peter Oberacker (R/C – Schenevus) today commented on Governor Hochul’s State of the State address:

“New York continues to lead the nation in outmigration – skyrocketing state spending, rising crime, and a lack of accountability in Albany are all contributing factors and it is time for the governor to look in the mirror and admit to her role in our setbacks.

“The state of the state message came up short when it comes to pro-growth, tax relief policies that are vital.  Small businesses and farmers were given only scant lip service, and I take that as a personal slight to those I represent in the 51^st Senate District.

“The governor’s recognition that our bail reform law isn’t working is long overdue and something I have been calling out since my election.  It is time for one-party-rule at the Capitol to recognize this failed experiment and come together to make our streets safer.

“I welcome additional resources to help strengthen mental health and drug addiction programs and will fight to ensure that the rural areas I represent receive equitable funding to meet our growing needs.

“While I am supportive of programs to protect our environment, I was particularly concerned with the unrealistic plans that the governor offered that will only raise costs for those who already cannot afford to heat their homes or drive to work.

“I look forward to fully reviewing the details of the governor’s proposals and how she plans to pay for these items – our state budget is already higher than Texas and Florida combined, and additional spending and tax hikes are unacceptable.”
