Senator Peter K. Oberacker Jr. proudly represents New York’s 51st Senate District, which includes all of Delaware, Otsego, Schoharie, and Sullivan counties, as well as portions of Broome, Chenango, and Ulster counties. First elected in 2020, he took office on January 1, 2021, and is currently serving his third term.
A resident of Otsego County, Senator Oberacker lives in the hamlet of Schenevus with his wife and high school sweetheart, Shannon. He considers his greatest joy being Shannon’s husband, a proud father of two, and an even prouder grandfather of four.
Raised in a family of sausage makers, Senator Oberacker began working in his family's meat market at the age of eight—holding a butcher’s knife far more than a crayon. After graduating from SUNY Delhi, he joined his father in running Spicey Pete’s Meat Market where he developed his trade. He later built a successful career as a research chef and food scientist, specializing in ingredient formulations for beef, pork, and poultry products.
His career in public service began with his election to the Maryland Town Board, followed by terms as Maryland Town Supervisor and Otsego County Representative, where he served on key committees including public works and negotiations.
In the State Senate, Senator Oberacker champions issues vital to rural New York—supporting local emergency services, strengthening local farms and agriculture, expanding rural broadband access, and securing resources to improve local infrastructure. His legislative efforts are known for being community-driven and grounded in the real-world needs of his constituents.
Outside the Capitol, Senator Oberacker is a proud member of the C.H. Graham Hose Company, where he has volunteered for nearly 40 years. He is a SUNY Delhi Athletic Hall of Fame inductee and, in his free time, can often be found tending to his horses or doing chores around the barn.
