WALKILL, 10/25/23 -- State Senator Peter Oberacker (R/C – Schenevus) recently joined members of the Federated Sportsmen’s Clubs of Ulster County to unveil the newest “Lend-A-Pole” location at the Walkill Public Library.

“Upstate New York is steeped in sporting traditions and fishing is one of the most popular outdoor activities that can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages,” said Senator Oberacker.  “The members of the Federated Sportsmen’s Clubs of Ulster County are constantly working to educate and engage the next generation of sportsmen and this innovative program is a prime example of the work they are doing to foster a lifelong love for the outdoors.”

“It is vital that we teach our young people about the importance of our natural resources and provide them with opportunities to pursue the many great sporting activities we have here in Ulster County and throughout New York State,” said Federated Sportsmen’s Clubs of Ulster County President Ray Valk.  “Opening our latest lend-a-pole program at the Walkill Public Library continues our commitment to educating our youth and helping them appreciate the role they play in conserving wildlife for the betterment of all.”

The Walkill Public Library lend-a-pole program joins several other locations throughout Ulster County.  Fishing poles and tackle can be “checked out” by young anglers and upon return, is serviced by federation members and prepared for the next youth angler.  Cabinets and equipment are provided by the Federated Sportsmen’s Clubs of Ulster County.

The Federated Sportsmen’s Clubs of Ulster County, Inc. is an organization of independent hunting, fishing, trapping, and shooting clubs throughout Ulster County, funded by sportsmen’s clubs throughout the county and the Ulster County Dept of Mental Health.  The federation supports several youth programs including the Fish & Wildlife Coalition for Youth, and the Future Fisherman Foundation.  Money raised by the federation’s member clubs is also awarded through youth grants.

“Local sportsmen’s clubs are comprised of men and women who care deeply for our environment and the preservation of wildlife.  As a sportsman and a state senator, I am always eager to partner with groups like the Federated Sportsmen’s Clubs of Ulster County and support their initiatives that are essential to New York’s future,” concluded Senator Oberacker.
