ALBANY, NY - State Senator John C. Liu, Chair of the Senate Committee on NYC Education, and State Senator Shelley Mayer, Chair of the Senate Committee on Education, stated the following about today’s SED report on mayoral control.

The 281-page report comes two years after the most recent extension of mayoral control in 2022, which included a provision that SED conduct a comprehensive review and assessment of the overall effectiveness of the City of New York’s school governance system.

"The report is an objective and authoritative review of school governance in New York City over the last 50 years and other models of school governance from around the country. It will be invaluable in legislative deliberations and decision-making as the June expiration of mayoral control approaches. We are highly appreciative of Commissioner Betty Rosa and her team of educational professionals at the State Education Department and look forward to thoroughly digesting their findings and recommendations as we take up the important matter of school governance in NYC once the state budget is enacted.”
