New York, NY – State Senator John Liu, chairperson of the Senate Committee on NYC Education, stated the following about the appointment of Kamar Samuels as the next Chancellor of NYC Public Schools.
“Hearty congratulations to Kamar Samuels on taking the helm of the nation’s largest school system, a tremendous responsibility at this moment in time that will require a practiced hand and steadfast commitment to steering the ship straight. Kamar inherits a system that has been capably led by Chancellor Aviles-Ramos, who admirably kept our schools stable amid a city administration rocked by instability and controversy. For the sake of NYC’s nearly one million public schoolchildren, it is imperative to move forward with clear leadership that leaves students, families, and educators confident about their future while contending with looming threats to education and outright sabotage from the White House.
“Kamar has also demonstrated a commitment to complying with state law that lowers NYC class sizes to state and national norms, recognizing that it will require a robust capital plan to fully account for the construction of new school space alongside the hiring of new teachers. Armed with the state’s record increases in the budget for NYC public schools, these improvements are now funded responsibilities of the new administration that must be fulfilled so that all kids can receive the sound, basic education to which they are constitutionally entitled. This imperative, along with the impending June 30 expiration of the system of school governance based on mayoral control, requires that the new chancellor hit the ground running, which I’m confident he will.
“While education took a backseat to NYC’s affordability crisis during this past mayoral campaign, the two topics are intricately intertwined, with the consequences of each showing up every day in our classrooms and in our homes. Looking forward to rolling up sleeves and working together to make sure our schools are on track to provide the best education possible for all students in New York City Public Schools.”
