(Johnson City, NY) — Senator Lea Webb recently hosted a special community screening of Murder Has Two Faces, a three-part docuseries directed and produced by Lisa Cortés with journalism legend Robin Roberts. The event took place on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at Schorr Family Firehouse Stage.

The series, released in May on Hulu, shines a critical spotlight on the crisis of missing and murdered Black, Indigenous, and other women and girls of color. It examines how race, gender, and systemic failures have contributed to a lack of visibility and accountability in cases that deserve urgent national attention.

“This screening was an important opportunity to confront a crisis that has been overlooked for far too long,” said Senator Lea Webb. “Bringing Murder Has Two Faces to our district was about more than raising awareness. It was about honoring the lives impacted, demanding accountability, and pushing for real, systemic change. I am grateful to everyone who showed up to engage in this critical conversation.”

The evening featured a meet and greet with Director Lisa Cortés, followed by the screening of one episode from the series and a Q&A session that fostered meaningful dialogue between community members, advocates, and local leaders.

The event drew a diverse audience of residents, advocates, and community organizations united in shining a light on this urgent issue and advancing justice for families who have been left without answers.

Background:

Murder Has Two Faces explores the urgent need for justice for BIPOC missing and murdered women and girls while examining the stark disparities in how the media covers these cases compared to others. The docuseries highlights both personal stories and systemic inequities that demand collective attention.

This issue has also been at the center of recent legislative progress. In 2024, Senator Lea Webb and Assemblymember Karines Reyes secured $750,000 in the FY 2024 New York State Budget to establish and fund the New York State BIPOC Task Force (S4266A Webb / A5088A Reyes). The legislation passed unanimously in both houses of the Legislature, was signed into law by Governor Hochul in December 2023, and went into effect on March 26, 2024.
