(Ithaca, NY)- Senator Lea Webb presented the New York State Senate Empire Award to Hammerstone School, recognizing its groundbreaking work empowering women and non-binary people through carpentry and trades education.
Founded in 2013, Hammerstone School has redefined what trades education can look like by creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment. With fewer than three percent of carpenters nationwide being women, Hammerstone is addressing a longstanding imbalance by equipping students with both technical skills and the confidence to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields.
“We are so grateful for this recognition,” said Maria Klemperer-Johnson, Founder & Executive Director of Hammerstone School. “We love teaching, building, and fostering community. Being recognized with the Empire Award is a meaningful affirmation of the passion and purpose that drive us.”
“Hammerstone School is a shining example of how education can be a tool for equity and empowerment,” said Senator Webb. “By providing a supportive space for women and gender minorities in the trades, Hammerstone is helping to build stronger, more inclusive communities across our region.”
Hammerstone’s classes range from basic carpentry to advanced projects such as tiny houses and interior detailing, blending hands-on learning with values of self-reliance and creativity. Alumni leave not only with new skills but with a renewed sense of empowerment and possibility.
Through its dedication to breaking barriers and building confidence, Hammerstone School exemplifies the spirit of the Empire Award.
