ALBANY, N.Y. — Senator Patricia Fahy, Assemblymember Gabriella A. Romero, and Assemblymember John T. McDonald, III, released the following joint statement upon reports that four UAlbany students, three RPI students, and one Siena student had their visas revoked without justification or explanation:
“We are deeply disturbed by the Trump administration’s revocation of student visas without justification or explanation. The Constitution guarantees fundamental rights and due process to all people, not just U.S. citizens. History tells us that although persecution often begins with attacks on immigrant communities, it rarely ends there, which begs the question: Who is next?
The continued assault on our institutions of higher education, student free speech, and freedom of assembly undermines the very principles of our democracy. Students should not feel powerless and fearful simply because of their immigration status. We urge Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to reverse these visa revocations immediately and to end their attacks on the constitutional rights of students on New York State campuses.
In the Capital Region, we remain steadfast in our dedication to the rule of law and the Constitutional rights afforded to every person on American soil.”
