Peekskill, NY - New York State Senator Pete Harckham and Assemblymembers Chris Burdick and Dana Levenberg recently called on the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to pave the badly deteriorated section of state Route 133.
“We write today to voice the serious safety concerns of a significant number of our constituents about the badly deteriorated condition of New York State Route 133 spanning the towns of New Castle and Ossining in Westchester County,” the legislators said in a joint letter to NYSDOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez.
The legislators said that they met recently with local residents advocating for the repaving of this vital thoroughfare. The group, which has collected 1,500 signatures calling for repaving, cited road conditions as the cause for numerous traffic accidents occurring on the stretch of highway.
The legislators said, “We can also attest personally from our own driving experience and that of our team members about the urgent need to repave this road.”
The Department itself has identified Route 133 from Vails Lane/Somerstown Road in New Castle to Pleasantville Road / Croton Avenue in Ossining as requiring resurfacing.
The New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC), which steers federal funding for projects throughout the New York City metropolitan area, has also added resurfacing Route 133 to its Transportation Improvement Program, identifying the stretch between Pleasantville Road in Ossining to Route 100 in New Castle as the area to be addressed.
The three-mile corridor is estimated to serve more than 6,000 vehicles daily, including school buses, emergency vehicles, and commercial traffic connecting New Castle and Ossining.
Additionally, the legislators requested a meeting with the NYSDOT Commissioner and the agency’s regional staff to discuss their concerns about the roadway.
