SENATOR ROXANNE J. PERSAUD ANNOUNCES $30 MILLION
IN LOCAL GRANTS AWARDED SINCE 2016
(Brooklyn, New York) - on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at a celebration of ten years of service in the NYS Legislature, Senator Roxanne J. Persaud announced that, since taking office in the New York State Senate in 2016, she has awarded more than $30 million in grants to organizations either in Senate District 19 or those that directly serve Senate District 19 constituents.
To date, Senator Persaud has awarded more than $25 million in state-administered capital projects grants and more than $5 million in programmatic operating grants to local institutions and organizations providing education, social services, programs for seniors, recreational opportunities for underserved youth, community-based health care, first response, and other critical services to help constituents thrive.
“I’m proud to support local community-based organizations that lift up young people, protect our vulnerable neighbors and help all New Yorkers to thrive”, said Senator Roxanne J. Persaud. “While great need exists in Senate District 19, we have a wealth of commendable community institutions and organizations that truly lead in their mission to connect New Yorkers to resources. I’m a staunch advocate for the funding that my community needs and I will continue to deliver.”
Of the $25 million in capital grants awarded by Senator Persaud:
- $7.25 million has been awarded to NYC public schools for projects ranging from new auditoriums to ADA-compliant bathrooms, computer labs, cafeterias, air conditioning, multimedia studios and playgrounds.
- $5 million for public parks and non-school playgrounds.
- More than $3.6 million to improve security at various NYCHA and Mitchell-Lama residences.
- Nearly $2 million to improve public and community-based health facilities.
- Nearly $1.5 million for institutions of higher education.
- More than $1.2 million for organizations empowering people with disabilities including vision loss.
- $755,000 for first response and public safety institutions.
- $750,000 for various branches of the Brooklyn Public Library.
More than $5 million in operating expense grants have been awarded to local organizations including, but not limited to: the Jewish Community Council of Canarsie, American-Italian Cancer Foundation, The Campaign Against Hunger, New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, East Flatbush Village, Neighborhood Housing Services of Brooklyn, NYPD Youth Explorers, Emblem Health Foundation/Neighborhood Cares, and others.
In addition to the above Senate District 19 grants, Senator Persaud has championed tens of millions of dollars of budget appropriations supporting programs that serve all of New York State including, but not limited to, the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), New York State diaper banks, the Disability Advocacy Program (DAP) and the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP).
The Office of Senator Roxanne J. Persaud considers all grant requests, with priority review given to proposals received before the December 31 preceding annual state budget discussions taking place from January through March 31st. Grant request guidance is available here.
