Brooklyn, NY — On Saturday, October 25, 2025, New York State Senator Roxanne J. Persaud hosted her annual SD-19 Domestic Violence Awareness Event at the I.S. 211 John Wilson School gymnasium in Canarsie. The event brought together community members, advocates, and local organizations for a day of reflection, awareness, and empowerment in support of survivors of domestic violence.

The program opened with a powerful with prayer by Reverend Gail Soanes-Taylor and then a performance by the I.S. 211 Tigress Steppers, setting a tone of unity and strength for the day. Senator Persaud was joined by guest speakers Ms. Consuelo Pinales and Dr. Audrey Dupree Sealey, and inspiring presenters Dr. Barker of Consuming Fire Ministries and Rev. Dr. Anthony M. Graham of New Hope Family Worship Center.

Attendees participated in heartfelt discussions and were moved by performances from the NYPD Youth Dancers, Divine Explosion Arts Program, and Spice Generation Dance Company. The program also featured a stirring poetry reading by Tashia King, insightful role play presentations, and a self-defense demonstration by Sensei Jackie.

The event’s partners, including the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, Healthfirst, The Genuine Gems Inc., Midwood Lions Club, The Urban Resource Institute, Cooleys Anemia Foundation, and Women Empowered for Destiny, provided valuable resources and support for attendees.

“Domestic Violence can happen to anyone regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation” said Senator Persaud. “Together, we will continue to raise awareness, support survivors, and stand united in the fight against domestic violence.”
