Senator Sutton's Swearing In Ceremony

(Albany, NY) --- Sam Sutton was officially sworn in today as the New York State Senator representing Senate District 22, which covers the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Midwood, Flatbush, Borough Park, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, and Sheepshead Bay. Senator Sutton won a special election held on May 20, 2025, to fill the seat left vacant by now New York City Councilmember Simcha Felder. The ceremony, held at the New York State Capitol, was attended by family, friends, and colleagues. The oath of office was administered by Senator Sutton’s son-in-law, Rabbi Joseph Beyda, in the State Senate Chamber.

Senator Sutton was sworn in using a special copy of the Keter Aram Soba, a Bible which was safeguarded by the Jewish community of Aleppo, Syria for many centuries.  The use of this Bible is a tribute to the Senator’s deep commitment to his traditional values and reflects his dedication to community service.  Senator Sutton is thankful to Congregation Shaare Zion of Brooklyn, NY, of which he has been a member since childhood, for loaning this special artifact for this purpose.

"I am honored and humbled to take the oath of office for the 22nd State Senate District and I thank the voters for placing their trust in me to serve them in the State Senate," said Senator Sutton. "I am eager to get to work, to listen, and to tirelessly advocate for the needs of our community here in Albany. We have much to accomplish, and I look forward to fighting for our community's priorities and for the residents of the 22nd District.”

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins welcomed Senator Sutton, saying, “Today’s swearing-in of Senator Sam Sutton is a proud moment for the people of the 22nd District and for our entire Democratic Majority. Sam has already demonstrated a deep commitment to the everyday needs of New Yorkers and his neighbors in South Brooklyn. His record of community advocacy and coalition-building will be invaluable as we advance a bold agenda focused on opportunity, equity, and economic growth. I look forward to partnering with Senator Sutton as we continue delivering real results for every corner of New York.”

Senator Sutton is a long-time nonprofit executive and Sephardic community activist. A Brooklyn native, Sutton has worked for many nonprofits, including serving 30 years with Sephardic Bikur Holim, a social service organization. He has also worked for the Sephardic Community Federation, New York Cancer Center, the Safe Foundation, and is a former trustee of the Langone Medical Center at NYU Hospital.

“I’m delighted to join the South Brooklyn community in congratulating Sam Sutton on being sworn in today as State Senator,” said Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein. “I’ve known Sam for a long time and am confident that he will do a great job advocating for his constituents in the State Legislature. I look forward to working with him in Albany, on behalf of the residents in our area. Mazel tov, Sam!”
