FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 16, 2025
Brooklyn, NY — On Wednesday, July 9th, State Senator Chan proudly welcomed a new cohort of Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) interns, marking the beginning of an exciting season of civic learning and community engagement at the district office.
One week later, on July 16th, Senator Chan’s office celebrated the interns’ first successful week on the job—highlighting their early contributions, enthusiasm, and commitment to public service.
These young leaders bring fresh ideas, sharp curiosity, and a deep interest in public service, and we couldn't be happier to have them.
The Summer Youth Employment Program provides thousands of teens and young adults across New York City with their first paid job experience, helping to build valuable skills while fostering a sense of civic responsibility. The Senator’s office serves as a placement site each year, offering students the opportunity to experience government firsthand by supporting legislative outreach, constituent services, and local initiatives.
Throughout the week, interns participated in office orientation, met with district staff, and engaged in conversations about public policy, advocacy, and local government operations. They also had the opportunity to assist with planning community events and drafting outreach materials to inform and support residents of the district.
As a father of two myself, I cannot express how grateful I am to have the opportunity to teach and lead the next generation of community organizers and leaders.
Just recently, senior advisor Ari Kagan accompanied a handful of interns to NYPD's 62nd police precinct and Brooklyn's Community Board 11.
The SYEP internship program at the Senator’s office will continue through the summer, with participants gaining insight into public service and developing the skills to become the next generation of community changemakers.
Over the coming weeks, the interns will take part in a wide range of hands-on community initiatives, including park cleanups, constituent outreach, neighborhood surveys, event planning, and supporting legislative intiatives.
