FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: AUGUST 11, 2025
Brooklyn, NY—On August 11th, Senator Chan’s team, Assemblyman Lester Chang’s team, and a group of volunteers came together to host a clean-up on 8th Ave.
They began their cleanup at 10:00 AM and finished up around 12:30 PM. Initially, the streets were littered with garbage and foliage, which created an unsanitary area that pedestrians had a hard time traversing. Hazardous materials, such as used condoms and medicine bottles, bestrewed the area, creating a treacherous pathway for citizens. The cleanup proved to be quite frivolous, resulting in over a dozen garbage bags filled with waste and other debris to be collected. Senator Chan’s interns expressed their opinions on the cleanup.
An intern, Celine, from Senator Chan’s office stated, “This is a great opportunity to beautify our neighborhood and keep South Brooklyn clean.” This provides insight into one of the many ways that one could give back to the community. Meanwhile, also stressing the importance of tidying up our neighborhood. A clean, organized district leads to a safer, more united one.
The sentiment is shared as another one of Senator Chan’s interns, Ayla, stated,
Participating in the clean-up gave me a sense of pride, and I think it was a great chance for us as a community to enrich ourselves in not only the environment, but also connect. Clean-up events can be beneficial for both our streets and also a way to make a more tight-knit community.
This event mirrored the park clean-up event that occurred on July 25th, 2025, as many people from different groups gathered to polish up our parks. On both occasions, volunteers worked tirelessly to beautify the area. However, even after hours of working, the volunteers were only able to make a small dent in the amount of trash and foliage in the regions. Nevertheless, if everyone did a small part, the deeds would amount to a great change. This stresses the importance of community service and doing our duty as members of a district.
Senator Chan noted that this impressive cleanup effort was made possible through the collaboration with Assemblyman Chang's office, the Better Brooklyn Association, and the Department of Sanitation.
These events involved more of the youth getting involved in community service and socializing. The rise of the youth engaging in these activities acts as an example for others to possibly follow suit in their communities. We need more events that involve our community, since they allow individuals to foster a sense of responsibility and leadership for our neighborhood. Along with this, the youth become more connected with one another, leading to a united, strong community.
