Senator Ryan Honors Sheila Dion as Senate District 50 Woman of Distinction
May 5, 2026
Senator Christopher J. Ryan is proud to announce Sheila Dion, founder and director of Erin’s Angels, as his 2026 New York State Senate Woman of Distinction honoree. The annual recognition celebrates the achievements and contributions of extraordinary New York women who have enriched the quality of life in their communities and beyond.
“Sheila Dion exemplifies what it means to lead with compassion and determination,” said Sen. Ryan. “Her commitment to ensuring that no child goes hungry, her ability to turn empathy into action, and her dedication to building stronger communities make her an inspiring leader. It is my honor to recognize her as our 2026 Woman of Distinction.”
Dion has dedicated her life to serving others, with a particular focus on combating childhood food insecurity in Central New York. As the founder of Erin’s Angels CNY, Dion has built a powerful network of volunteers and partners to provide more than 40,000 meals each year to children in need through a weekend backpack program. Recognizing that food insecurity extends beyond the school year, she expanded the organization’s impact through a summer meal program, ensuring children have reliable access to food year-round.
Dion’s work is rooted in compassion and purpose. She named Erin’s Angels in memory of Erin Maxwell, honoring her story by protecting and uplifting children across the region. Beyond addressing immediate needs, Dion has created lasting opportunities for young people through scholarships and mentorship, helping to break cycles of poverty and invest in the future of Central New York.
“I am deeply honored and incredibly grateful for this recognition,” said Sheila Dion. “I accept it on behalf of a community that chose love and refused to look away. Erin's Angels was created in Erin Maxwell’s memory, and her story continues to guide us —reminding us that children deserve dignity, belonging, and care. This recognition belongs to the volunteers, partners, and families who believe in showing up for one another. Erin’s Angels was built on the belief that no child should carry hunger alone, and together, our community continues to prove what’s possible when compassion turns into action.”
In addition to her work with Erin’s Angels, Dion is a leader in strengthening the broader community. She is the founder of Oswego Women Lead, an initiative that connects and supports female professionals and entrepreneurs, and serves on the Advisory Council for the Oswego County Community Foundation. Through her consulting work, she continues to support small businesses and nonprofit organizations across the region.
Dion’s impact continues to grow through meaningful partnerships with local businesses and nonprofit organizations, including the Food Bank of Central New York, helping to expand access to essential resources for families across the region.
The New York State Senate Women of Distinction ceremony will take place on May 5, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. in Albany.
