Senator Cooney and Senator Brouk Announce $50,000 NYS Grant for Youth Organization ROC Royal

New York State Senator Jeremy Cooney
Funding Will Expand Summer Camp and Afterschool Programs and Strengthen Support for Youth and Families.

(ROCHESTER, NY) - Today, Senator Jeremy Cooney (SD-56) and Senator Samra Brouk (SD-55) announced a $50,000 state grant they secured for Roc Royal, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing youth programming in the Rochester community. This funding will be used to expand its 585 DREAM Summer Camp and Afterschool Programs, creating more opportunities for young people to participate in engaging after school activities.

The grant will support youth development and crime prevention through additional staffing and expanded access to safe, structured programs led by trusted adults. Funding will strengthen enrichment activities focused on education, social-emotional learning, leadership, and personal development, and expand mental wellness support and resources for youth and their families.

“The best way to stop a bullet is to wrap our arms around our children,” said Senator Jeremy Cooney. “We do that by supporting organizations like Roc Royal that create spaces where our youngest learners are uplifted and empowered to succeed both in and outside of the classroom. When young people have safe places to go, we help prevent violence and create pathways to opportunity. I was proud to secure funding alongside Senator Brouk to help Roc Royal expand its programs and make a meaningful difference for Rochester’s children and families.”

“We know our young people thrive when they have meaningful after-school activities focused on academic enrichment, wellness, and empowerment,” said Senator Samra Brouk. “That’s why I was proud to join my colleague Senator Cooney to secure $50,000 in funding to support Roc Royal’s 585 DREAM Summer Camp and Afterschool Programs. When we provide opportunities for children to thrive, we help uplift and strengthen families in our community.”

Khadija Yawn, Roc Royal Founder, said, “At ROC ROYAL INC, we believe every child deserves more than just a place to go. They deserve a place where they feel safe, valued, supported, and empowered to dream beyond their circumstances. Our work is rooted in building meaningful relationships, creating opportunities, and providing the tools young people and families need to grow, heal, and thrive. We understand that strong communities are built through connection, consistency, and compassion. That's why we remain committed to standing alongside Rochester's youth and families, meeting them where they are, and making sure every young person knows their future matters.”

Tiffanni Williams, Parent and Advocate, said, “Being connected to Roc Royal has been such a positive and rewarding experience for both my boys and me as a parent. The opportunities, support, and genuine care they provide have made a meaningful impact on their growth and development. I'm truly grateful to be part of a community that is so intentional about investing in our children and their future.”

Roc Royal was founded in 2018 by Khadija Yawn, with the goal of empowering youth and families through inclusive community-based programs. Its 585 DREAM Afterschool and Summer programs serve children in grades K-6 and youth ages 5-13, providing academic support and opportunities to develop skills that support long-term success.

Roc Royal has served more than 15,000 families and serves more than 200 youth each year. Its programs maintain a daily attendance rate above 90%. The organization reports that 90% of participants improve their conflict-resolution skills, 85% strengthen their emotional expression, and 95% build new friendships.
