Press Release

“At a time when the U.S. Supreme Court is willing to gut key provisions of the Voting Rights Act and red-states are aggressively suppressing minority voices, New York can’t afford to sit on the sideline,” said Senator Cooney. “When we vote on the proposed amendment to change our redistricting process, it will be about putting the choice directly in the hands of the voters, making sure New Yorkers are fairly represented in Washington, and about taking a stand against the aggressive maneuvering of red-states nationwide. I’m proud to support this proposal because it’s imperative that our state meet this moment and protect our democratic process. Again, the final decision is up to all New Yorkers and we are empowering them to act!”

The proposed amendment would allow for mid-decade redistricting in New York, which has previously not been permitted. New York lawmakers are expected to vote on the amendment before the end of the legislative session on June 4th; it would then need to be approved directly by voters.
