Senator Zellner, Assemblymember Conrad Announce $1.1 Million Investment In Town of Tonawanda Parks
June 18, 2026
(AMHERST, N.Y.) – New York State Senator Jeremy Zellner and Assemblymember Karen McMahon today announced $6.25 million in state funding they secured for critical infrastructure, community facilities, and recreational improvements throughout the Town of Amherst.
The funding package includes investments in critical wastewater infrastructure, playground improvements, and recreational amenities that will enhance quality of life and strengthen public assets across the community.
Senator Jeremy Zellner said, These projects address needs that are both immediate and long-term. From modernizing critical infrastructure that protects public health and the environment to improving the parks and community spaces that families enjoy every day, this funding will make a meaningful difference across Amherst. I was proud to work alongside Assemblymember Karen McMahon to secure these investments.
Assemblymember Karen McMahon said, Investing in our infrastructure, parks, and community spaces is an investment in the people who call Amherst home. These projects will help ensure reliable public services, create new opportunities for recreation, and improve quality of life for residents of all ages. I was proud to partner with Senator Jeremy Zellner to secure this funding and deliver resources that will benefit our community for generations.
Amherst Town Supervisor Shawn Lavin said, Thank you Senator Zellner and Assemblymember McMahon for investing in Amherst. Today’s announcement ensures we can deliver better services to residents. The Town’s Water Pollution Control Facility is a regional asset, serving several communities and UB. This funding will allow us to maintain and improve this critical infrastructure, and improve efficiency. The support for our popular recreational facilities will benefit not only today’s users but also future generations. The more we can be outdoors, interacting with our neighbors, the healthier we grow.
Amherst Cryogenic Plant ($5 Million)
The Amherst Cryogenic Plant is a critical component of the Town's wastewater treatment infrastructure. Funding will support the replacement and modernization of aging equipment that has been in service for more than four decades, helping ensure the continued reliability, efficiency, and long-term sustainability of the facility.
Amherst Town Engineer Jeff Burroughs said, The facility utilizes a high-purity oxygen activated sludge process that relies on a cryogenic oxygen generation system installed in 1980. While the system has been carefully maintained and rehabilitated over the years, it has now exceeded its expected service life. This investment will help ensure the long-term reliability of the treatment process and allow us to continue meeting our environmental obligations.
Northwest Amherst Community Center Playground ($700,000)
The Northwest Amherst Community Center serves as a hub for community programming and childcare services. Funding will support the construction of a new playground, expanding recreational opportunities for children and families who utilize the facility.
North Forest Park Playground ($300,000)
North Forest Park is home to one of Amherst's two outdoor pools and is one of the Town's most heavily used recreational destinations. Funding will support the installation of a new playground, enhancing amenities for residents and families who visit the park.
Royal Park Pickleball Court Lighting ($250,000)
Royal Park has quickly become a popular destination for recreation since opening in 2025. Funding will support the installation of lighting for the park's pickleball courts, expanding access to the facility and accommodating growing demand for the sport.
