New York, NY - Senator John Liu stated the following about reports that Governor Hochul plans to opt in to President Trump’s so-called “Freedom Scholarships.” 

“President Trump’s so-called ‘freedom scholarships’ are a Faustian bargain of the worst kind, promising savings like bait on a fishhook to lure families away from public education. Governor Hochul must not take the bait and undo years of effort by her own office and the state legislature to fully fund Foundation Aid and ensure all public school students receive a sound basic education. Public schools educate all kids, regardless of ability and without discrimination, making it one of the most essential responsibilities of government. It’s no secret that this federal administration wants nothing to do with public education, and has offered few details on how the voucher program will work, which is all the more reason to be suspicious of this scheme and not jeopardize the firm footing of our public schools on this slippery slope.”
