(Ithaca, NY) – In celebration of Record Store Day, Senator Lea Webb presented Angry Mom Records with a New York State Senate Empire Award, recognizing seventeen years of leadership in cultural diversity, affordability, local artistry, and community connection. Each year, Record Store Day celebrates the culture of the independently owned record store, with artists releasing special editions of their music for that day.
Angry Mom Records is an independent record store and record label that has served Ithaca’s music lovers for more than a decade. Founded in 2009 by George Johann, the shop is a beloved cultural institution, offering an expansive selection of music, affordable vinyl, and a welcoming space.
Said Senator Lea Webb, “Music is one of the ways we develop community, and Angry Mom Records has been cultivating those connections for years. I am proud to honor them with a New York State Empire Award to celebrate their endurance for Record Store Day.”
Affordability is a core principle of Angry Mom Records’ business model. Mr. Johann has emphasized the importance of keeping prices accessible, believing that music should be placed directly into people’s hands. This commitment has fostered loyalty among customers and strengthened the store’s role as an inclusive gathering space.
“Angry Mom Records is honored to receive the New York State Senate Empire Award from Senator Lea Webb. For the last 17 years, we have been a central hub on the Ithaca Commons & the only independent record store in our area, providing new and used products. We cater to our local customers along with a vast amount of tourists daily, quickly becoming a destination for Ithaca visitors,” said George Johann, Founder of Angry Mom Records. “We have been able to evolve & expand our physical space, which now holds one of the area's only all-age live music venues. We remain humble but are also excited about what else we can accomplish in the coming years.”
The New York State Senate Empire Award recognizes businesses and organizations that demonstrate excellence, create local impact, and contribute to the vitality of their communities.
