(Cortland, NY) - NYS Senator Lea Webb presented Area 51 in Cortland with a NYS Empire Award. The NYS Empire Award is the highest award a NYS Senator can bestow upon businesses and organizations in their district.
Area 51 has emerged as a vibrant and inclusive hub for gaming and community connection in the City of Cortland. Owned and operated by Megan and Fran Crowe, this locally-rooted small business has distinguished itself through its unique retail offerings and its intentional commitment to fostering a welcoming space for individuals of all backgrounds and interests.
Since its founding, Area 51 has cultivated a strong identity as a destination for tabletop gaming, collectibles, and pop culture enthusiasts. Area 51 serves both seasoned hobbyists and newcomers alike. Its thoughtfully curated inventory reflects a deep appreciation for gaming culture while ensuring accessibility and engagement for a broad and diverse customer base.
The Crowes’ recent relocation of Area 51 to Riverside Plaza marks a significant milestone in the business’s growth and impact. This expansion has enabled increased operations and product offerings and strengthened the business’s ability to engage with the broader Cortland community.
“Receiving the NYS Empire Award is a tremendous honor for Megan, me, and our entire team,” Said Frank Crowe, co-owner of Area 51. “When I first started this journey in 1995, I wanted to create the kind of space I did not have growing up: a place where people could gather around gaming, be themselves, and connect with others who shared their interests. Gaming has a universal way of bringing people together, and as Area 51 has grown over the years, it has been especially important to us to offer something for everyone, whether they are lifelong hobbyists, new players, families, or people simply looking for a place where they feel welcome. We are incredibly grateful to the Cortland community for supporting us through every chapter of this journey, and to Senator Webb for recognizing what Area 51 has become. We remain committed to giving back to our community and continuing to provide a safe, welcoming space where people of all backgrounds can play, collect, connect, and belong.”
“I am proud to present Area 51 in Cortland with a NYS Empire Award,” said Senator Lea Webb. “This business has intentionally brought together community members through their continued programming and events in addition to selling merchandise to the gaming community. I appreciate their dedication to providing a gathering space for families and community members alike to connect and build connections.”
