Today, Senator Webb honored local environmental leaders from the Southern Tier. This celebration, marked by the presentation of six official awards from the New York State Senate, highlights the essential impact and accomplishments of women and women-owned businesses within the community.
This year, in celebration of Earth Day, Senator Webb proudly presented four Commendation Awards and one Empire Award honoring individuals and businesses whose leadership has made lasting impacts in our communities. The event recognized those who have made significant contributions to combating climate change, advancing sustainable agricultural practices, and addressing food insecurity within the community.
“Earth Day reminds us that we all share a responsibility to protect our environment. I am grateful to the environmental advocates, workers, and neighbors who champion environmental issues each day,” said Senator Lea Webb. “I am proud to recognize this year’s honorees for their contributions to environmental sustainability. Each of these leaders demonstrates the dedication, compassion, and commitment that make Senate District 52 such a vibrant and resilient place.”
“I appreciate this recognition from Senator Webb. I have lived in Ithaca for more than 25 years, and over that time this place has become part of me. Through hiking, gardening, and years of community work, I have come to feel even more keenly that we have a responsibility to reduce waste, protect public health, and defend the land and waters that sustain us,” Said Yayoi Koizumi. “I accept this recognition in honor of my fellow organizers, group members, and the people I’ve worked with over the years who keep showing up and doing the work.”
“Stellar Human has made such an impact on my life, and I’d like to think it’s done so for others as well. Providing not only an affordable opportunity to shop curated vintage clothing, but also providing a space for culture and community,” said La’Rue Simmons. “As a Broome County Native, it makes the space even more special because it’s something that the area has never seen before, but I believe is needed. It brings me so much joy to be able to share my gifts and the gifts of others with the world.”
“I’m honored to have received this award, but I wouldn’t be here without the great team at Catholic Charities. My agency is here to serve members of our community who are struggling with food insecurity, housing issues, mental health and substance use issues, and stigma,” said Timothy Lockwood, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Cortland County. “It is hard work, with many barriers and setbacks, but the staff is very dedicated, and we are here to serve our community one person at a time. I truly enjoy the work I do as it has allowed me to meet many amazing people trying to do better in an increasingly difficult world.”
The awards were presented to:

- Tim Lockwood, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Cortland County, Commendation Award
