Senator Gallivan Honors Orchard Park Veteran

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) is naming U.S. Army veteran Sergeant John Schroeder of Orchard Park to the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame. Schroeder began basic training in January 1968 at Fort Dix, N.J. before undergoing advanced infantry training at Fort Polk, LA. In May of 1968, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Rangers, 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam.
For his service, Mr. Schroeder was awarded the National Defense Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm.
Following his military service, he worked for the Wm. Wrigley Company for 32 years. He retired as a Regional Sales Manager in 2007.
Over the years, Mr. Schroeder has continued to serve his community in numerous ways. He is a life-member and past Commander of the VFW Post 6247 in Orchard Park and a 57-year member and Past President of American Legion Post 567. He is also a member of Amvets Post 219, Vietnam Veteran Post 77, Society of the Big Red One, and Disabled American Veterans.
“John Schroeder’s lifelong service and dedication to his country, his fellow veterans, and his community serves as an inspiration to all,” said Senator Gallivan. “I thank him for his military service, and his ongoing commitment and leadership in supporting organizations that help our veterans and advocate on their behalf.”
Schroeder has been the chairman of the Memorial Day Parade and Celebration in Orchard Park for the past 33 years. As chairman of the Veterans Memorial Park revitalization project, Mr. Schroeder helped secure over $300,000 in donations and grants to install granite monuments, bronze statues, lighting, walkways, benches and more. He continues to care for the park by planting flowers and helping with maintenance.
He is a member of the Orchard Park Lions Club and has served as chair of multiple events. He is the recipient of the Lions’ highest honor, the Melvin Jones Award, for exemplary service to the Lions and the community. He was also honored with the Post of Fame Award for service to the country and community.
Schroeder is a graduate of Orchard Park High School. He and his late wife have two children and a granddaughter.
The New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame honors and recognizes outstanding veterans who have distinguished themselves in military and civilian life. Each honoree’s photograph and biography are part of a special on-line exhibit commemorating the contributions of these exemplary New York veterans.
A ceremony honoring this year’s Hall of Fame class was held May 26, 2026, at the Capitol in Albany.
