News: Myrie Statement of Shootings in Texas and Maine

BROOKLYN— Senator Zellnor Myrie (D-Central Brooklyn) released the following statement in response to the recent shootings by ICE in Texas and Maine:

"The Trump Administration is taking unprecedented actions to violate our rights. State leaders must respond in kind with equally bold action to protect our communities.

 

"In less than a week, ICE agents have now shot and killed people in two separate incidents on opposite ends of the country. Every day, federal agents are detaining thousands of people, trampling our civil liberties and endangering public safety in the process.

 

"This year New York passed strong laws to hold agents accountable when they violate our constitutional rights. Federal agents, including ICE officers, must know they will face consequences for their actions.

 

"Since the January shootings in Minneapolis, ICE may have changed its leadership and its rhetoric. But it hasn't changed its DNA. New York won't change ours either: we will always stand up to defend our communities."

In May, Governor Hochul signed the New York Bivens Act, a law sponsored by Senator Myrie to hold federal agents accountable for violating constitutional rights, as part of a package of immigrant protections included in the 2026-27 New York State Budget.
