(ALBANY, NY) — On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, State Senator Lea Webb proudly inducted Colonel Benjamin W. Margolius, U.S. Army (Retired), into the New York State Senate’s Veterans Hall of Fame during a ceremony held at the State Capitol in Albany. The event, which took place following Memorial Day, honored Colonel Margolius alongside other distinguished veterans from across the state.
Colonel Margolius, a resident of Vestal, NY, served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1991, including two combat tours in Vietnam and a recall to active duty for Operation Desert Storm. His military career spanned over three decades, with key leadership and operational roles in Korea, Germany, Okinawa, the Netherlands, and several stateside assignments. He retired as the Chief of Joint Operations for the U.S. Transportation Command.
The New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame recognizes veterans who have not only served with distinction in the military but who have continued to give back through civic, charitable, and community leadership. This year’s inductees represent a diverse array of backgrounds and contributions, reflecting the rich tapestry of service and dedication across New York State.
“Colonel Benjamin Margolius represents the best of our country, through his courageous service in uniform and his unwavering commitment to uplifting fellow veterans and neighbors here at home,” said Senator Lea Webb. “It is a profound honor to recognize his lifetime of service by inducting him into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame Class of 2025. His leadership, integrity, and compassion set a powerful example for us all.”
“I am deeply honored and humbled by this recognition,” said Colonel Margolius. “I’ve always believed that service doesn’t end with retirement, it just takes on a different form. Whether in uniform or in the community, we all have a role to play in making a difference. I share this honor with my fellow veterans, my family, and all those who support our service members past and present.”
In retirement, Colonel Margolius has remained a tireless advocate for veterans and community programs across the Southern Tier. He has held leadership positions with the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group (STVSG), and multiple civic and faith-based organizations.
Colonel Margolius’ military decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Bronze Star (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and multiple other commendations reflecting his extraordinary record of duty and leadership.
Senator Webb’s selection of Colonel Margolius for this year’s Veterans Hall of Fame recognizes not only his exemplary military career but also his continued contributions as a mentor, volunteer, and community leader in the Southern Tier and beyond.
